Dental Implants in Yonkers, New York!
If you are missing a tooth (or teeth), it can affect your life in many ways. You may feel self-conscious when you smile, and you may have difficulty speaking and eating properly. Missing teeth can make you look old before your time. When you are missing a tooth, it can have a long-term effect on your other teeth and your health in general. Over time, your other teeth start moving and shifting in your mouth, which can cause problems with your bite and also problems with your jaw. There are a few different methods that can help patients who are missing teeth, and dental implants are a very effective choice!
What are Dental Implants?
The most commonly used type of implant is the endosteal implant, which has three parts: the implant itself, which is made of titanium and acts like a tooth root, is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth; the abutment, which is placed on top of the implant; and the new tooth, which is fitted onto the abutment.
What is the Procedure for Getting a Dental Implant?
From start to finish, the procedure to get an endosteal implant can take a few months, but the time spent is well worth it. Dr. Morrow will perform a thorough oral exam, discuss implants with you and answer any questions you may have. You should have good bone density, a strong immune system and a history of good oral health.
If you and Dr. Morrow agree that implants are the right solution for you, he will take X-rays and molds of your jaw to determine the spacing of the bone and gum tissue. This information will help him to develop an individualized treatment plan for you. At a future appointment, he will insert the implant. To do this, he will use a local anesthetic to numb the gum. Then, he will surgically insert the implant into the bone socket of your missing tooth.
It takes time for the implant to fuse with the bone (a process called “osseointegration”) — anywhere from six to 12 weeks. At one of your appointments, Dr. Morrow will take a mold or impression of your mouth, which will be used to make your artificial tooth. When your new tooth is ready and your implant is secured in the jaw, he will place your new tooth.
What Types of Dental Implants are Available?
If your oral health is good and you don’t have any major problems, your dentist will probably recommend an endosteal implant. This type of implant is made up of the titanium implant that acts as the root of your new tooth, the abutment and the new tooth. However, if you are missing teeth but have serious issues with your jawbone, you can benefit from dental implants. In this case, Dr. Morrow will want to use a subperiosteal implant. This type of implant is placed under the gum, on the jawbone.
A subperiosteal implant is a metal frame that fits onto the jawbone. Over time, it becomes fixed to the bone, at which time, your dentist will attach posts to this frame, which protrude up through the gums. These posts are the anchors for your new, artificial teeth.
Subperiosteal implants are used in patients who don’t have sufficient jawbone to support endosteal implants. This often happens in the upper jaw, and can result from a patient missing teeth for a long period. Without teeth, the jawbone starts to erode, which means that endosteal implants won’t bond properly to the bone. This type of implant is used in patients who can’t wear dentures, have difficulty chewing food, or who have tender or sore spots on the gums because of dentures.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
One large benefit of implants is that, because they are securely set into the jaw, they feel very natural, like real teeth. They feel comfortable and stable even when speaking or eating.
Dental implants are also easy to maintain. Just brush and floss as you normally would. And, they can last a lifetime, if cared for properly.
Implants also keep the rest of the mouth healthy because the other teeth don’t have the opportunity to shift. Implants can get you back into enjoying life as you should. Eating your favorite foods and smiling and laughing without being self conscious.
Dental implants are an excellent solution if you are missing teeth. They look and feel natural; they are strong and sturdy; and they are easy to manage.
